The Joy of Giving
As Chinese New Year was approaching, William, Daisy and Rose eagerly started writing their wish lists. William dreamed of having a modern train set because he saw his friend with a magnificent model train set.   Daisy complained that her clothes were old-fashioned. She wanted some beautiful clothes. Rose desired a new blue bike although she already had one. When Mum saw her kids discussing happily, she interrupted them. She asked them, ‘Do you want to buy all of those things or use the money to help others?’   William, Daisy and Rose felt puzzled. They did not understand what their mum meant. So Mum sat down next to them and said, ‘Many people around the world need our help and support. Some people are very poor.   They don’t have enough money to buy food, clean drinking water and medicine. So they always starve and get sick.’   Daisy asked, ‘We’re just kids. How can we help them?’ ‘There are many ways we can help,’ Mum explained. ‘We can donate money, old toys and clothes to a charitable organization. To raise money for charity, we can sell or buy raffle tickets. If we have time, we can visit the poor families, orphanages and elderly homes to show our love and care to them.’   ‘We are lucky to have so much and it’s important to share our love and happiness with people in need. Now I don’t need a new bike. I can use the money to help others,’ Rose said. ‘I don’t buy a new dress. I want to donate the money to help the poor,’ Daisy declared. William said, ‘I can give some trains to the poor. I’ll persuade my friends to donate their old toys too.’   Mum hugged her children tightly and said, ’I’m glad that you all understand the importance of giving and helping others. I’m really proud of you.’   Message Share our love with others. Help people in need.   Bible verse Beloved, if God so loved us, we also must love one another. Love your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength and with all your mind. ( Luke 10 : 27 )
Rose and Daisy are close sisters. They study in the same Catholic primary school. Both of them are bookworms. Recently Daisy fell in love with a book called “The 5 Love Languages”. One lovely evening in the summer holidays, Daisy was busy as a bee, colouring and writing on a big poster in her room. She named it “Daisy’s Kindness Chart”. Rose just walked past her sister’s room. She paused because something caught her eyes. It was the amazing big chart. On the top of the chart, Daisy wrote all her family members’ names. Then down under she listed T-K-T-G: Things to do - little things she can do to make them happy Kind words - what to say to express appreciations and thanks Time - the precious moments she would like to spend with her family Gifts - the special gift which suits them the best Rose was puzzled with her brilliant sister’s masterpiece. Daisy left Rose’s column blank in things to do. Unhesitatingly, Rose told her sister, “You can make my bed.” Rose gave her sister a wink. It is a well-known fact that Rose never makes her bed. Rose : How can I be kind to you, Daisy? Daisy : You can tell me that I’m your favourite sister! Rose : You’re my favourite sister indeed. I only have one. The story is taken from CEO Project 1.0 – Love (Level 5) Unit 2 A kindness chart (QEF Project No.2018/1226)   Message Kindness is an act of love. Being kind also means caring for the poor and the needy, for God wants us to be kind to one another.   Action Have you shown your kindness? Plan your kindness chart. Who will be on your kindness chart? If your chart is empty, do not be shy. Look around. Think and ask. Act it out. Jesus will help you.   Glossary Masterpiece (noun) - respected work of art 最傑出的作品 Unhesitatingly (adverb) - immediately, at once, right away 毫不猶豫地

Somersaulting parts of speech 翻筋斗的詞類
翻筋斗的詞類
First lesson in switching parts of speech in English 初步認識英文的詞類轉換 T:Thomas|R:Richard   R: Hi Thomas! May I ask something about English parts of speech? I read somewhere that you could say, for example, “This book is a good read.” … But then someone may say, “That proves a good reading.” …What’s the difference then?   T: Ah, I see your problem. It’s using the verb (to read) as a noun in the first example, and using the same verb as a verbal noun (reading), that is a gerund, in the second example.   R: (Richard looking a bit puzzled)   T: Mind you, there’s a subtle difference here. We can turn most common verbs into nouns without changing the form, like in your first example “a good read”, right from the verb “to read”, to suggest that reading this book is a good thing, a pleasure.   R: Can you show me some more examples?   T: Certainly. We usually say things like : “ I’m glad that we have mastered this procedure”, turning the noun into a verb again, or “Can I give you a lift in my car”, turning the verb “to lift” into a noun, meaning a free ride. This is called “somersaulting parts of speech”, and people say it was “invented” by Shakespeare!   R: That’s really eye-opening.   R: 嗨Thomas!我可否問問關於英語的一些事情?我在某處閱讀到,例如,「This book is a good read」(這本書很好讀)。……但也有人可能會說,「That proves a good reading」(顯然這值得一讀)…… 我們通常會這樣說:「I'm glad that we have mastered this procedure」(很高興我們已經掌握了這個程序),再次將名詞變成動詞,或者「Can I give you a lift in my car」(我可以開車送你一程嗎?),將動詞「to lift」變成名詞,意思是順道送你一程。在英文文法,這稱為「somersaulting」,據說由是莎士比亞發明的!   R: 這真是令人大開眼界。

Think outside the box
Here is a puzzle in the form of a square or a box of three rows with three dots each. Please connect the nine dots with four straight lines continuously, without lifting your pencil from the paper. You have one minute to complete this task. Are you able to solve this puzzle?   Some of you may not have been able to get the solution because you think that you must stay within the box consisting of the nine dots. If you want to solve this " nine dots puzzle" , you must think beyond the square.   Since its creation in the early 20th century, the nine dots puzzle has been widely adopted by psychologists and management consultants. In the 1970s, the expression " think outside the box " became a cliché, especially in the business world. For example, Our company is recruiting young people who can think outside the box.   In modern world, the ability to think outside the box may help employees to think creatively and in an unconventional manner in the face of challenges.
