At the beginning of the school year, you might have heard your mum telling you every morning, “Eat your breakfast. It’s the most important meal of the day. Otherwise, you can’t learn well at school.” It is true that we should not skip breakfast even when we are in a rush. After a long night sleep, it is important to strengthen yourself with a healthy breakfast.

Breakfast foods are different from place to place. In Hong Kong, we have traditional Chinese breakfasts like rice congee, steamed rice rolls (cheung fan) and barbecued pork buns (char siu bao). In addition, we have Western foods like bread, ham and fried eggs. What do you usually have for breakfast?

In the West, traditionally there are two major types of breakfast: full English breakfast and Continental breakfast. Full English breakfast is popular in the UK and other parts of the English-speaking world such as the USA and Canada. It consists of cooked food such as bacon, poached or fried eggs, sausages, tomatoes, baked beans, hash browns and mushroom. It also includes toast with butter and jam (or marmalade). Even at lunch time, sometimes people may order a full English breakfast at a restaurant. Continental breakfast is a light meal served in Continental Europe such as France and Spain. It consists of a croissant, orange juice and cereal with milk. There is no cooked food. Nowadays, these two types of breakfast are not eaten every day at home, but are still commonly served at hotels. Have you ever tried either of these? Which one do you prefer?
