How would you react if you were Margaret ?
Margaret is the only child at home. She has been hoping to have siblings(兄弟姊妹)for a long, long time, but this is simply against her parents’ thinking. She gets quite bored at home as both her mom and dad work long hours; she is always home with just a domestic helper (家傭)who is forever talking on the phone, ignoring her. Margaret always has her dinner alone. Most of the time she studies, other than that(除此之外), she practices on the piano. She never complains as she is a quiet person, very reserved(沉默).  One night while Margaret was sound asleep(熟睡), she was suddenly awakened by her parents arguing. She immediately realized there was a fierce fight(爭拗) between her mom and dad, their voices were raising, and not long after she could hear the noise of glass items being blown t o smithereens(成碎片). Most unexpectedly the door flung(猛推)open; her parents marched in and demanded her to take a side(袒護)between two of them. Margaret was entirely lost(徹底迷失).  How would you react if you were Margaret ?  Use the same level of voice and shout back to the two adults that they have to solve their own problems. It is not fair to ask a kid to take side and it is not the right hour for any family discussion, as there will be school the following day. Tell them to keep quiet and sleep.  Ask them to calm down and give each some time to say his / her stance(立場)one by one, do not give advice but try to describe feeling of theirs, be it angry, frustrated(挫敗╱洩氣), being wronged(委屈), feeling unfair(不公平), jealous(嫉妒), scared(驚恐), anxious(忐忑), sad, depressed(沮喪)etc. Tell them God understands us more than we understand ourselves; say a short prayer with them and all should go to sleep with a forgiving heart, as God forgives us.

What would you do if you were Bob?
Bob comes from a low income family. He lives in an undersized(比普通小的)flat with his parents, both working long hours every day, and also an elder brother as well as a younger sister. Bob has always been a very placid(溫馴的)boy and tries his best to help out at home.  Stepping into secondary school, Bob started developing a great interest in playing soccer, a sport he had never participated(參與)before. This boy does have a talent in soccer and his passion surged(激增)day after day. He practised earnestly(認真地)with his schoolmates before class, during recess and after school──making good use of every minute in his free time. Towards the second school term, he was totally ebullient(興高采烈的)for being selected into the school team. Wanting to improve his skill in dribbling 盤球/帶球 and deceptive movements (假動作), Bob longed(渴望)to have his own ball so he could practice nightly (每晚)nearby in the neighbourhood. He well understood that a soccer ball would cost money and there would be no space to store it, therefore, he borrowed his elder brother’s. Bob had to be super careful not to lose it, yet, he was miserable when a truck smashed the ball flat.  What would you do if you were Bob? • Save on transportation and skip lunch so there will be money to buy a new one before telling his brother what has happened. A new ball should appease(平息) his disappointment.  • Bring the case to his brother up front and agree on a solution. Perhaps his brother has in mind another model he’d like to have, and the cost can be split(分擔). Honesty pacifies(使平靜)the situation.

At the eleventh hour
In April 2016, a newspaper in Hong Kong reported that Leon Lai(黎明), a Cantopop singer, had to cancel the first of his concerts at the eleventh hour because the venue did not meet fire safety regulations.  Does the idiom “at the eleventh hour” means at “eleven o’clock”? If we do something “at the eleventh hour” (最後一刻;最後關頭), we do it at the last minute.  Some scholars believe that this idiom comes from King James Bible(《詹姆士王聖經》), an English translation of the Bible for the Church of England(英國聖公會)published in 1611. In the Gospel of Matthew(《瑪竇福音》), Jesus talks of a parable, in which a landowner hired labourers for his vineyard at the eleventh hour.  “And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing idle, and said unto them, ‘Why stand ye here all the day idle?’ ” (Matthew 20:6)  In the time of Jesus, people counted the daytime, from sunrise(6 a.m.)to sunset(6 p.m.), into twelve hours. Since the labourers were hired at the eleventh hour(i.e. 5 p.m.)of a 12-hour working day, they only worked for an hour.  Scholars believe that eventually the phrase came to be used to express the meaning of “the last possible moment”.  However, do not mix this up with the time of the Armistice Day(休戰日), which marks the end of the First World War at the eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the eleventh month(i.e. at 11 a.m. on 11th of November)in 1918. Every year, a lot of places, such as Hong Kong, hold a memorial service on this day(also known as Remembrance Day (和平紀念日)).  Glossary Cantopop 粵語流行曲 Fire safety regulations 消防安全規例 Parable 寓言 Landowner 地主 Labourers 工人 Vineyard 葡萄園 Hired 雇用 Memorial service 紀念儀式

His name is Ted. He has small eyes and a straight nose. He likes listening to classical music and jogging when he is free. He is smart and has a great sense of humour. He always tells jokes and makes me laugh.  Uncle Ted is a doctor. He works in a hospital. He has been a doctor for thirty years. He works very long hours every day. He needs to help and take care of sick patients. He sometimes needs to do operation too. He is as busy as a bee. Although the work pressure is great, he likes his job because it is very meaningful. It gives him a lot of satisfaction particularly when he sees the patients recovering gradually.  Doctors need to have outstanding academic result. They are often the top scorers. They also need to be patient and understanding. A good doctor always puts himself in patients’ shoes so that he knows what is the best for the sick people. If anything goes wrong, the outcome will be disastrous. Uncle Ted works hard and he is patient and careful enough to be a good doctor.  Uncle Ted often shares his working experience with me. One day, when he was going to work, an old lady suddenly fainted on the street. The passersby were so shocked that they did not know what to do. Staying clam, Uncle Ted immediately gave her the first aid treatment until the ambulance arrived. At last the lady was safe. Her family was very grateful for my uncle’s help. Uncle Ted was very glad.  I think my uncle is doing a sacred and meaningful job because he saves people’s lives. Without him, more patients will be suffering. I am really proud of him. Thanks Uncle Ted and all the doctors.  p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica; min-height: 14.0px} p.p2 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; text-align: center; line-height: 25.1px; font: 25.0px Helvetica; color: #a53fa0} p.p3 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; text-align: justify; line-height: 11.1px; font: 11.0px 'Helvetica Light'; color: #2d2829} p.p4 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; line-height: 12.1px; font: 11.5px Helvetica; color: #9a97ca} span.s1 {font: 12.0px Helvetica; color: #000000} Charis Tang Canossa Primary School(San Po Kong) 6E 圖畫: 美麗的德國小鎮 p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica; min-height: 14.0px} p.p2 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; text-align: center; line-height: 11.1px; font: 16.0px Helvetica; color: #2d2829} p.p3 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; text-align: center; line-height: 11.1px; font: 11.0px Helvetica; color: #2d2829} span.s1 {font: 12.0px Helvetica; color: #000000} 范正言 德信學校 五A    湖 邊 黃靖珊 嘉諾撒聖心學校(私立部) 四B
