In an office, in a school, or

Company or an Organisation

When the phone is picked up by the office, and they announce who they are, you have to tell them who you are.

I am Peter Lam and I would like to speak to the Manager of your Company.”

If you are the receptionist in the office, you have to identify yourself as soon as you pick up the phone.

When a question begins with WHEN,

the answer is always about time.

“When do you get up in the morning?”

“I get up in the morning at seven o’clock.”

To tell the time, we use TO before the hour.

4:40 pm = twenty to five or four forty in the afternoon

2:45 pm = a quarter to three or two forty five in the afternoon

MUCH MANY

Much is used to describe something you cannot count. It is something “abstract”, for example, much poverty (being poor), much energy (being full of life), much strength (being strong), much waste, much cheating, much goodness.

It is also for collective nouns, for example, much food (many things to eat), much money (dollars and cents), much fun (games to enjoy).

INTRODUCTION

As we begin to refresh our English, we want to remember some basic rules which will help us speak and write English very well. English is a living language so it changes according to the time and place where people speak this language.

We begin by learning to greet people in the proper way.

Usually we greet a person by his given name, example, ‘Good morning, John’. If we do not know him well, we say, ‘Good morning, Mr. Chan’.
