Nowadays, telephone ("phone" informally) is one of the most common appliances in households and businesses. Speaking over the phone is as important as talking to people face to face. Therefore, when you phone ("call" in American English and "ring" in informal British English) someone, you need to follow some rules of etiquette.

Watching Television

Nowadays the most common leisure activity in Hong Kong is watching television. Almost all households have at least one television set. After a hard day's work or study, most people want to relax in front of the television. "Television" (or "TV") is also called "telly" in British English. Do you spend your free time watching TV? What television programmes do you like most? There is a variety of television programmes ("programs" in American English) or shows in Hong Kong such as news, sports, and documentaries.

Waste Reduction

According to the Environmental Protection Department, Hong Kong generates over 18,000 tonnes of waste every day. If we do not act quickly to manage waste, our existing landfills will be full within a matter of years and we will be drowning in our own rubbish (“garbage” in American English). Have you ever thought of how much rubbish you alone create from the moment you get up in the morning until you go to bed at night?

Sending letters

Do you remember what the letter you first received was about? What was your feeling? When you excitedly wait for the post (“mail” in American English), do you ever realize how much manpower it involves? Of course, the most important person is the postman (“mailman” in American English) who carries heavy loads in the wind and rain. In the West, postmen have to deliver post even in snow and sometimes get barked at by dogs.

Mid-Autumn Festival

The Mid-Autumn Festival falls on the 30th of September this year. This festival is traditionally celebrated on the fifteenth day of the eighth month in the Chinese calendar, which is usually in September or early October in the Western calendar. Chinese people sometimes call the Chinese calendar the “yin calendar” or the “old calendar”. In contrast, the Western calendar, which is an internationally accepted calendar, is called “yang calendar” or the “new calendar”.

Congee and porridge

According to some studies, breakfast is the most important meal of the day because it may help to regulate appetite and energy. What food do you normally have for breakfast, the Chinese-style congee or the Western-style bread? Among Chinese people, the most traditional breakfast food is congee. When eaten as plain congee, it is often served with side dishes such as deep-fried dough sticks and salted duck eggs. Quite often we prepare the congee with additional ingredients, such as meat and fish. Which kind of congee do you like most?
