Run so as to win. ( 1 Cor. 9:24 )

Oscar Pistorius did not win the 400 meters in the 2012 Olympic Games. Where did he win a gold medal in a 400 meters event?

In the 2012 Paralympics with the time of 46.68 seconds, and the 400 relay in 41.78, both new records.

To any runner, the relay event is a much tougher race. It requires not only that each individual runs his best, but that he also has a flawless exchange of the baton.

Olympics Anyone?

Did you watch Oscar Pistorius run in the 400 meters at the London Olympic Games this summer? What an athlete!

Wouldn’t you want to be an Olympian too?

I thought about it. I think I will train for the 2016 Games in Brazil. What do you think? Would I succeed?

Faith and Reason

From the title, some of you are already thinking about the encyclical (通諭) written by Blessed Pope John Paul II in 1998 in which he showed how faith and reason are intertwined and not separable. He wrote it in response to the modern and mistaken notion that matters of faith are somehow irrational, unreasonable.

Is faith and reason really incompatible? In other words, does having faith means we cannot reason, and if we use our reasoning power we cannot have faith?

What is an elephant?

What is an elephant? How does one describe it?

Even better than that, how does one tell a blind person what an elephant looks like?

Or if you take a blind person up to an elephant and let him touch it, how would he describe what he felt? And if you take different blind persons to touch an elephant how will their descriptions be different?

Year of Faith (Oct 11, 2012 to Nov 24, 2013)

Now that the Year has begun, what have you thought about? Has the priest in the parish mentioned anything that interests you: a Bible study class, a review of the teachings of the faith, a study of the Vatican Council documents, attending a retreat?

In the course of this year, I would like to examine a few issues of our faith beginning with FAITH itself. What is it really?

Where are we going?

Pope Benedict announced the Year of Faith to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council (梵蒂岡第二屆大公會議) and the 20th publication of the Catechism of the Catholic Church(《天主教教理》).  He intends for us to take some time to examine our faith in light of both the Council and the Catechism in order for us to look ahead to where we need to go.

Family History

Have you ever traced the history of your family back a few generations?  In our Chinese culture, there was a practice of placing the names of the children in the ancestral “temple” (祠堂) in the village or town where the family supposedly came from.  I was told that I came from Guangdong(廣東新會潮連).  It is my desire to someday go and visit the place.
