Last week we looked at Rom. 10:14-15 (“And how can people preach unless they are sent?”) and considered the role of the bishops and priests as teachers of the truth. This week we will look at the content of the truth being passed on.

Rom. 10:17, “faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the word of Christ.”

One of the most unique qualities of the Catholic Church, differing from other Christian denominations, is this “Authority of the Church” , to teach as Jesus taught. It comes primarily from Mt. 28: 28-20, Mt. 16:18-19 and Lk. 22:31-32.

Corpus Christi The Body of Christ

“ Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. ” ( Jn. 6:54 )

The second central mystery of the Catholic Church is the doctrine of the Holy Eucharist; Jesus gave us His Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity as our spiritual food.

As Catholics we have the tremendous gift from Jesus to receive Him in the Holy Eucharist. This is no small matter. Yet, so many receive Him such recklessly,

“My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” ( Jn. 10:27 )

The bishop asks the one to be ordained, “Do you promise obedience to me and my successor ?”

“Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” “Feed my lambs.” Jn. 21:15-21

With these words, Jesus gave Peter and the Church the responsibility to “feed” His lambs both in His Word and the Holy Eucharist. In Mt 28: 16-20, Jesus gave the mission of “teaching everything He had commanded” to the apostles.

“O death, where is your victory?

O death, where is your sting?” (1 Cor. 15:55)

This Sunday is Divine Mercy Sunday. Last time I wrote, we reflected upon the love Jesus had for us, and that love was to be witnessed by married couples in their total giving of themselves to each other as gifts of God. (Eph 5:21-33) This week, we reflect upon the great message of the Resurrection of Jesus as the sure sign of God’s mercy.

One Last Word on Love It is foolish to love.

IMAGINE when you were 9 months old. (I said imagine because none of us can remember when we were 9 months old.) We are just so cute. We crawl around. Make sounds that no one knows what they are about. We look goofy. And everybody loves us. They even crawl with us, big grownups, and make silly noises with us. They have a ball playing with us…. UNTIL…..

AHHHH! We dirty our diapers.
