Let’s go to the Grotto of the Nativity

Have you ever thought of spending Christmas at Jesus’ birthplace?

Let me take you to a very old church in the town of Bethlehem, the Church of the Nativity.

Its entrance is small and narrow, so we must bend down to go in.

Tall pillars stand on both sides of the vast church interior. Walking past them we approach the sanctuary. A queue has gathered in front of a doorway. We line up behind them in keen anticipation, waiting for our turn to enter.

One by one, down a half-winding staircase, we come to the underground G r o t t o . We c a n s e e a b r i g h t ly ornamented altar, and, below it, lit with hanging lamps, is a large silver star on a white marble floor – the place where Jesus was born!

Opposite, we find the Altar of the Manger, the place where Baby Jesus was laid by His Mother.

How wonderful to be here, at the Grotto of the first Christmas! Let’s pray for peace, and love one another as Jesus wants us to do.

So many visitors are behind us that very soon, we find ourselves up again by another stairway.
