What would you do if you were Loretta?

November is the Month for the Dead, a month dedicated (獻給)to the Holy Souls in Purgatory. Loretta has been reminded again and again that this is the time to commemorate(紀念)her late(過世)relatives, her ancestors(祖先), and people whom she does not know but have not yet attained(獲得)the joy of heaven. She decides to grab a quick bite(速食)at the canteen and save some time to say prayers in the little chapel(小聖堂)at school.

Two weeks have gone by. Every day Loretta’s friends press(催促)her to go out for lunch with them, she persists in(堅持)prayers and refuses all lunch invitations. Her friends do not understand and started teasing(嘲弄)her. One day, they confronted(質詢) Loretta about her belief(信仰). They claimed(聲稱)if God was fair, He would not let a sinner go to Heaven by having heard Loretta’s prayer. They accused(指責) Loretta as being superstitious(迷信).

What would you do if you were Loretta?

• I’d tell the Religious Studies teacher about being wronged (誤解)and ask the teacher to explain to the whole class so as to prove(證明)that my doing was appropriate(恰當).

• I’d keep quiet and hum(哼曲)the lyrics of the song Be Not Afraid as a prayer to encourage myself --- “Be not afraid, I go before you always, come follow me, and I will give you rest... And if wicked men insult(侮辱)and hate you all because of me, blessed, blessed are you!” I’d keep praying for the dead for the whole month of November because it’d be a holy act. My friends’ mocking(嘲笑)could not stop me.
