‘Speak Out - Act Up’ Improvised Drama Competition
沈莉雅 德貞女子中學 二B
On 15 March 2018, I joined a drama competition called ‘Speak Out - Act Up!’ Improvised Drama Competition because I have a great interest in acting. On our first day of practice, we were given our topics “Hong Kong Technology / Multiculturalism 20 years ago”. This was quite challenging. We couldn’t have a very long script because it would get boring but on the other hand, we couldn’t have too many movements either as it would confuse the audience. We were given only two chairs as props, and we couldn’t use any makeup or costumes to make the characters obvious.
During the rehearsals, we often forgot our lines. Each time we had to start all over, and it became frustrating. Whenever I wanted to quit, my teachers and teammates encouraged me not to give up but to continue our practice. At last, we were awarded the Team Merit Award and the Audience Prize, and surprisingly I got the Best Actress Award!
I used to believe that acting was all about the use of costumes and props. However, after joining the competition I realized that acting is all about how you react simultaneously and naturally when you speak. I would like to thank my teachers who always motivated us, gave us tips on how to make our dialogues better. I would also like to thank my teammates who worked so hard with me. After such an invaluable experience, I am sure I would like to join the contest again next year.
