Time flies! This is the Year of 2018! What is your New Year’s resolution? Getting higher grades at school, doing more housework, or developing a good habit? A lot of people said that it is easy to make a resolution, but it is hard to “keep the ball rolling”.

The idiom “keep the ball rolling” means to continue the action without stopping or to maintain the enthusiasm for a particular target. This expression started to be popular when there was a presidential election in the USA in 1840. That time, a supporter of William Harrison, one of the candidates, wrote a song as part of the election campaign. Part of the first verse is as follows:

What’s the cause of this commotion, motion, motion,

Our country through?

It is the ball a-rolling on ….

Apart from this campaign song, Harrison’s supporters also used a gimmick called

“Victory Balls”. These balls, which were made of tin and leather, were taller than average men. His supporters rolled the balls through the streets from one rally to another, while the crowd chanted,

“Keep the ball rolling.”

Nowadays, the idiom appears in several versions. For example,

This is a nice idea. Let us set the ball rolling(開展有關工作)

The manager will go to Singapore to start the ball rolling (率先起個頭)on the business contract.

To keep the ball rolling(繼續下去;不中斷)on your New Year’s resolution, perhaps you may focus on a modest one.
