St. John the Apostle was a Jew from Galilee. He was the most beloved Apostle of Jesus. John and his brother, James and his father, Zebedee fished in the lake of Tiberias. Jesus called them to follow him at the lakeside. John was the youngest among the 12 Apostles and was not married. He was also the only one to die naturally at his old age. The other Apostles were all killed and died for their belief.
St. John was called the “Beloved Disciple” as he was always with Jesus. He witnessed every important event as recorded in the Bible: The first miracle of Jesus, the transfiguration, the agony in the Garden. In the hour of the passion of Jesus, he was the only Apostle standing faithfully at the cross with the Holy Mother, Mary. Jesus asked John to take care of his mother. And from that hour, John took her into his home. John was representing all of us and made us the children of the Holy Mary.
After the death of Jesus, John and Peter went out everywhere to proclaim the Kingdom of God. John was thrown into prison by the High Priest while teaching in the temple, but was later released. He started writing the fourth Gospel in 96 A.D., recording the various happenings while he was living with Jesus. This is the Gospel of John. He also wrote three Epistles and the Book of Revelation.
He died in 100 A.D. at the age of 94.
