maggie and milly and molly and may

went down to the beach (to play one day)

and maggie discovered a shell that sang

so sweetly she couldn’t remember her troubles, and

milly befriended a stranded star

whose rays five languid fingers were;

and molly was chased by a horrible thing

which raced sideways while blowing bubbles: and

may came home with a smooth round stone

as small as a world and as large as alone.

For whatever we lose (like a you or a me)

it’s always ourselves we find in the sea

E.E. Cumming’s poem is about four girls, Maggie, Milly, Molly, and May, who go to the beach together. Each of them is having fun by themselves. Maggie finds a shell, while Milly makes friends with astranded star. Molly is being chased by a crab and May picks up a smooth round stone. You may wonder, since these four girls go to the beach in a group, shouldn’t they have fun together? For certain, it will be nice if friends have common interest, but it does not mean that each individual should give up what they want to do. Some people would argue a lot if their friends refuse to share the same interest or the same viewpoints with them. Some people even break up with their friends for these reasons. But is that we are looking for friends who are exactly like us? Everyone should have the freedom to pursuewhatever he or she wants or whatever that he or she is interested in. Friends should be able to respect each other. When friends stay together, they make compromise and seek a common ground. It has to be reminded that compromises will not devalue anyone but show the strength of friendship.
