What is the meaning of this word PENTECOST ?
In Greek, it means 50.
What is this feast all about?
This feast of Pentecost is a very important and wonderful feast marking the coming of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles in the Upper Room. If you remember your Gospel story, after Jesus was crucified and killed by the leaders of the Jews, the Apostles ran away and hid themselves for fear of being caught by these Jewish leaders.
After 50 days of his Resurrection, Jesus sent the Holy Spirit on the Apostles, as he had promised he would do. On that day, the Apostles saw shapes of fire like tongues which came on their heads. At once they were filled with a fantastic power. They became changed, from being afraid and confused, to being bold, brave and full of enthusiasm to speak about Jesus.
Pentecost is the birthday of our Church. When Peter and the other Apostles spoke to the people about Jesus, thousands of them believed and received Baptism. So the Church started from that time.
What about us today? Can we be changed too? Yes, if we really believe in the power of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit brings seven spiritual gifts for us: wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety and fear of the Lord. When we trust in the Holy Spirit, we are full of joy, peace, gentleness, patience, faithfulness, kindness, love, purity and self-control.
Sometimes in our study, we feel afraid we cannot learn all the lessons in our books. We can call on the Holy Spirit to help us. Sometimes we have no courage to do some good things we want to do, because we are afraid people will laugh at us. The Holy Spirit will give us strength and power to overcome all these fears. Many times we see the Holy Spirit helping us in our desire to be good and to help the poor especially when they ask us for help.
On this Pentecost day we hope to receive the Holy Spirit into our life so that we can become really true followers of Jesus – strong people, full of courage and love, ready to serve anyone in need especially in our school and in our home.
