Anne Frank was an ordinary Jewish girl. She is well known because of her diary “The Diary of Anne Frank”. Through her diary, we are able to see what life was like for Jewish people during the Second World War. Many children and their parents were imprisoned and killed by German Nazis under the leadership of Hitler.

Anne was born in Germany in 1929. When she was small, Anne, her elder sister and parents moved to Amsterdam in Holland because Hitler became the leader of Germany. Then Germany invaded Holland in May 1940. To escape from persecution, Anne and her family went into their hiding place, a secret annex. That time Anne was 13 years old.

During her time in hiding, Anne wrote down all her thoughts and feelings in her diary in Dutch. Imagine you were Anne, what would you feel? Anne hated being hidden away from the outside world and always hoped that they would one day be free to step outside the dark, damp annex. Two years later, their hiding place was discovered. They were arrested and sent to a concentration camp. Anne died of typhus in 1945 when she was at the age of 15. Her father later had her diary published.

Their hiding place in Amsterdam has been renamed as “The Anne Frank House” and is open to the public. In 1999, “Time” magazine named Anne Frank on its list of “The Most Important People of the Century” for her voice in the fight for human dignity.
