Visit Northumberland!

Northumberland is a rural county in the most northern part of England. As it is very close to Scotland, its scenery is very different from other parts of England. It is also the most sparsely populated(人口稀少的)county in England. When I was travelling in this area last September, I visited Alnwick Castle and Holy Island.

Located in the town of Alnwick, Alnwick Castle is the residence of the Duke of Northumberland. It is also the second largest inhabited(有居民的)castle in England. I was dazzled by the lavishly(華麗地)furnished State Rooms in the castle and its extensive collection of artwork. This medieval castle attracted a lot of visitors as it was featured in the Harry Potter movies as Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry!

Holy Island, also known as Lindisfarne, is a tidal island connected to the mainland of Northumberland by a causeway(堤道)which is flooded twice a day by tides. As the causeway is submerged(淹沒的)at high tide(漲潮) and only exposed at low tide(退潮), visitors have to check the tide times carefully or else they will be trapped on the island ! On the island visitors can find Lindisfarne Castle, which was built in the 16th century. The view from the castle is truly breathtaking!
