Can you guess which profession the above pledge refers to? The Nightingale Pledge was created in 1893 in honour of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. Nurses have recited the pledge at graduation ceremonies for decades. In recent years, many nursing schools have changed the words and phrases in the pledge to reflect the current status of nursing.
Florence Nightingale (1820-1910) was born into a rich, upper-class British family. She was named after the Italian city of her birth, Florence, and brought up in England. Nightingale was very religious. She felt that God wanted her to do important work and decided to remain single. Despite her parents’ opposition, she took on nursing.
In 1854 the Crimean War began. It was a conflict between Russia on the one hand and Britain, France and Turkey on the other. There was no proper medical care for wounded British soldiers on the front line. Nightingale led a team of nurses to take care of them. They improved the hygiene at the hospital and reduced the death rate of soldiers. What nickname was she called there? She gained the nickname “The Lady with the Lamp” because she walked around the wards at night, with a little lamp in her hand, to make sure that the wounded soldiers were comfortable.
Later Nightingale returned to England and established a training school for nurses. To improve the nursing profession, she published a book called “Notes on Nursing” (《護理札記》) which helped many student nurses.
In 2008, the Hong Kong Lands Department named a street inside Queen Elizabeth Hospital “Nightingale Road”.
